Successful migration during ongoing operation: DE-CIX and SwissIX team up to modernize the Swiss Internet Exchange

Frankfurt am Main, 27 June 2023: DE-CIX, the world's leading operator of Internet Exchanges (IXs), and SwissIX, the operator of the largest IX in Switzerland, have jointly upgraded the technology of the Swiss Internet Exchange. For this purpose, the total of 220 networks connected to SwissIX were migrated to the award-winning DE-CIX Apollon platform. As an non-profit association, SwissIX is characterized by a neutral peering network, which is distributed over a total of seven different data centers in Switzerland. The migration took place during ongoing operations in overnight maintenance windows to keep the impact on customers as low as possible.

Beyond the migration, DE-CIX is responsible for technical operations, such as maintenance, upkeep, and further development of the SwissIX interconnection platform. This also includes technical customer support and provisioning, whereas the business management and marketing of SwissIX will remain with the association.

Dr. Thomas King, CTO at DE-CIX, comments on the start of the technical operation of the modernized SwissIX, “We are very pleased with the trust that has already been placed in DE-CIX as well as the continued success of the DE-CIX Apollon platform. The fact that the largest Internet Exchange in Switzerland – the fast-growing SwissIX – now also relies on our platform underpins on the one hand the quality of our work and on the other hand the attraction of our technical know-how. Together with SwissIX, we will adapt the operation of the Apollon platform to the specific local needs in Switzerland and drive its technological advancement.”

Matthias Cramer, CEO of SwissIX, says, “We have been looking for a suitable partner for the technical operation of our platform for a long time. We are confident that we have made the right choice with DE-CIX, an experienced Internet Exchange operator that, like us, follows a carrier and data center neutral approach. We are convinced that the technical takeover by DE-CIX will allow us to meet our quality requirements and to further develop the platform and our services in a future-oriented manner.”

DE-CIX operates a total of six IXs in Germany in different regions and partly in partnership models with local providers. The German IXs include DE-CIX Frankfurt, the largest IX in Europe, with peak data throughput of over 14 terabits per second. In total, the DE-CIX platform is accessible from over 250 German data centers and offers easy access to modern interconnection services. Globally, at around 50 locations worldwide, DE-CIX connects thousands of network operators (carriers), Internet service providers (ISPs), content providers and content delivery networks (CDNs), and corporate networks from over 100 countries and offers peering, cloud connectivity, and other interconnection services. Together, the DE-CIX IXs form the world’s largest neutral interconnection ecosystem, with a connected customer capacity of around 130 terabits.
