New case study: How HOCHTIEF improved performance of Microsoft 365

When you have around 3,200 users at 100 locations in various countries, working from construction sites, offices, and – during the pandemic – increasingly from home, having access to well-performing tools is important. HOCHTIEF – an engineering-led, global infrastructure group – wanted to make sure systems run smoothly, and to improve the performance of Microsoft 365 for their users regardless from where they work.

With the help of their partner ecotel, HOCHTIEF is now using the Microsoft Azure Peering Service to connect to Microsoft 365. Developed by Microsoft together with DE-CIX, the service involves a direct connection – in the form of a peering session at a DE-CIX Internet Exchange – from the client to the Microsoft cloud. The connection is isolated from the public Internet benefitting from a noticeable reduction in latency and also a greatly increased level of security.

90 percent decrease in latency

At HOCHTIEF, a simple direct connection replaced the complex network architecture, reducing the susceptibility to errors and leading to massively increased performance for users. For example, a reduction in latency from HOCHTIEF headquarters in Essen to Microsoft Teams within the 365 cloud went down from 53 to 5 milliseconds – a decrease of 90 percent.
