38 percent of Germans struggle with Internet problems

Umfrage: 38% erleben mehrmals wöchenlicht oder täglich langsames Internet

A new survey from DE-CIX has discovered that more than a third of Germans struggle with Internet delays several times a week. Young adults and people working from home are particularly aware of such delays and surprisingly, the population in urban areas reported problems with Internet speed more often than people living in rural areas.

Users look outside their own households for responsibility for delays

There is widespread agreement among respondents that the possible causes of poor Internet performance are primarily beyond their own control. 41 percent say that network congestion is the reason for the delays they experience, 32 percent blame poor local network roll-out, and 19 percent claim that their Internet provider does not offer enough bandwidth. 12 percent suspect the reason for the problems is slow servers operated by content providers such as Netflix. Only 10 percent of respondents blame their own outdated devices for poor Internet performance.

Target: max. 150 milliseconds latency

The provision of fast, low-latency and stable Internet in Germany is apparently making little headway. Following the German government’s recent decision on the right to fast Internet, there is now a concrete need for action on all parts of the digital infrastructure providers nationwide regarding latency, to reach the target of maximum 150 milliseconds.
