100G LR

With the increasing demand for higher bandwidth and better performance, the world of optical networking is constantly evolving. To help you to stay ahead of the curve, DE-CIX is introducing a new generation of optic transceivers, 100G LR, to its Internet Exchanges, starting with DE-CIX Frankfurt.

We are excited to be among the first Internet Exchange operators to introduce the cutting-edge 100G LR technology. This will help our customers to stay ahead of the curve and ensure their networks are ready to handle the demands of the future.

Both the existing 100G LR4 and the new 100G LR are types of fiber optic transceivers that can transmit data at a speed of 100 Gbps. The difference between the two lies in the type of modulation and number of lasers used.

100G LR4 uses four lasers, each carrying a signal of 25 Gbps, and uses wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology to combine these signals into a single 100 Gbps stream. The new technology 100G LR requires only a single laser and uses pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4) to transmit data at 100 Gbps.

Future proof solution: With the new 100G LR technology, we are paving the way for the next generation of transceiver technology that will dominate the market for years to come. 100G LR is standardized by the 100G Lambda MSA, which is an industry consortium with a common focus of providing a new set of optical interface specifications.

Reduced complexity and simplified management: As data rates increase, so does the complexity of transceiver modules and their interaction with switch and router host ports. 100G LR not only reduces the complexity of the transceivers, but also the total cost of ownership. Additionally, the simplified design makes it easier to manage and maintain, reducing the likelihood of downtime and improving reliability.

Compatibility and flexibility: 100G LR technology is already available with a wide range of compatible routers / switches from all major manufacturers and can use the same fibers. The flexibility of 100G LR ensures that it can be easily integrated with other networking technologies, ensuring compatibility with a broad range of devices.

Cost savings: One of the main advantages of 100G LR is the lower cost of optical components. As only one transmitter and one receiver are required instead of four, the transition from 100G LR4 to 100G LR1 can lead to a relative transceiver cost reduction of over 40%, according to IEEE.

  • If you are considering switching to one of the 100G LR ports, our sales team is here to help. For guidance on migrating from LR to LR4, please reach out to them at sales@de-cix.net.

  • As the LR transceivers offer a number of advantages, DE-CIX has decided to implement LR as standard for the 100G Access. This means that we offer 100G LR exclusively for all new 100G contracts.

  • Most router and switch models already support LR, so there is usually no need for you to take any action. However, in rare cases, a software update may be required. It is best to contact the manufacturer of your router or switch for specific information.

  • If you are using a 100G Access with LR4, there is no need for you to make any changes. We will continue to support 100G LR4 for all existing contracts. However, you can take advantage of LR and switch your Access from 100G LR4 to 100G LR if you so wish. To get assistance on migrating from LR4 to LR, please contact sales@de-cix.net. They are available to provide you with all the help you need.

  • Many transceiver manufacturers have already added one or more 100G LR transceiver models to their product line. For more detailed information, please reach out to your transceiver supplier directly.
