RIPE 80: A meeting of people running the Internet, on the Internet

Réseaux IP Européens or more familiarly RIPE is an independent, not-for-profit community of people working in the Internet industry. They usually hold meetings twice a year and RIPE 80 was planned to take place in Berlin, hosted by DE-CIX, but due to the current situation, the event went online for the first time.

Over three days of online meetings and working groups covering a variety of topics, such as anti-abuse, IPv6, and IoT, the event had around 2,000 registered participants daily. On the last day, a whopping 2,002 attendees registered and there were 1,148 unique viewers (691 via Zoom/457 via webstream). Our very own Wolfgang Tremmel, who is part of the RIPE Programme Committee, also chaired a session.

Live cooking with RIPEtinis

A big part of any event is, of course, to meet colleagues and friends from the industry, and catch-up over coffees and dinner. This year, the gala dinner took place online with live cooking instructions and very relevantly named cocktails. (It was the first RIPE meeting where Wolfgang had to cook AND make his own drinks…) There was also a pub quiz and dancing to the tunes of RIPE Dinner Spotify playlist.
