A year of strong customer growth and peak moments

Entering our 25th anniversary year with healthy growth and new markets

On our 25th birthday year, we can see that the Internet and the digital infrastructures on which it is based have come of age. The pace of digital transformation has accelerated and the world has come to realize the importance of robust digital infrastructures.

In 2019, milestones were achieved for many of our exchanges, and DE-CIX Frankfurt continued its success by breaking its own peak traffic world record. As well as entering the South East Asian market, our team was busy around the world, extending the reach of existing locations, setting up further enabled sites and access sites, and developing new services.

None of this would have been possible without our many valued partners around the globe. Without you – our ISP, carrier, data center, cloud, and hardware partners that make up our interconnection ecosystems worldwide - the Internet would not have developed as it has. Our story continues – at the cutting edge of interconnection technology – and we remain prepared for the future.

DE-CIX global growth in 2019

Customer growth

The number of connected networks worldwide grew to more than 1900, a growth of over 20%.

Connected capacity growth

The connected capacity at all DE-CIX Exchanges grew to more than 55 Tbits.

100 GE ports growth

The number of active 100 GE ports rose to more than 380, a growth rate of more than 27%.

Technical update: Keeping ahead of demand

In 2019 the technical team was active around the world, establishing new Internet Exchanges, adding new data center sites to existing Internet Exchanges, future-proofing networks, and responding to the demands for a greater variety of interconnection services.

We overhauled a number of networks in 2019, and capacities were increased substantially for example in New York, Marseille, Dusseldorf, Istanbul, and Mumbai. This represents a major investment in additional capacity and state-of- the-art network infrastructure, ensuring that our networks are ready for the future traffic growth we are expecting.

In order to make interconnection easy for our customers, in 2019 we continued our journey down the path towards automation. The developments of the DE-CIX API, introduction of a new customer portal, and implementing two addition patch robots are just the beginning of our journey towards greater automation and more simplified customer service. At the forefront of the digital revolution: New interconnection services

Responding to the demands for a greater variety of interconnection services, 2019 brought some exciting innovations. DE-CIX is constantly developing new services in order to make interconnection easy for everyone. New services technically implemented and taken to market last year were FlexPOP, InterconnectionFLEX, Closed User Groups, and the Microsoft Azure Peering Service.

Additionally, we made our existing interconnection services available in further international locations. For example, with the aim to create regional cloud ecosystems, the DirectCLOUD service is now not only available at DE-CIX directly, but also via more than 30 certified DirectCLOUD data centers, and via over 35 certified DirectCLOUD ISPs, allowing customers to reach more than 50 cloud service providers.

The DE-CIX Internet Exchanges worldwide

  • 1,900+ connected networks
  • 21 IXs
  • 100+ partners
  • 80+ countries
  • 500+ cities

Further growth across all regions, reaching new markets and locations

In 2019, DE-CIX experienced further growth across all regions and business units. Already the world’s leading provider of premium interconnection services, DE-CIX enjoyed more than 20% growth in customers globally, bringing the total figure to over 1900 customers. Growing demand for 100G ports – an increase of almost 28% – was partly responsible for the 21% growth in connected customer bandwidth, which reached a massive 55 Tbits during the year.

A significant milestone was achieved in DE-CIX Frankfurt by exceeding the number of 900 ASNs. The connected customer bandwidth rose to over 41 Tbits. DE-CIX Frankfurt also set new peak traffic world records: in September breaking the data throughput-mark of 7 Tbit/s, and in December hitting 8.1 Tbit/s. In addition, milestones were achieved for the exchanges in North America, Southern Europe, the Middle East, India, and South East Asia. Read more

Getting closer to the edge

The regional exchanges in Germany experienced aggregated growth of over 50% in customers, and nearly 80% in connected customer bandwidth. Munich established a further DE-CIX-enabled site located in Austria, the first DE-CIX exchange to have an enabled site in a different country.

Both Hamburg and Munich individually enjoyed growth of more than 50% in ASNs, while Dusseldorf exploded, with over 80% growth in ASNs. This positive growth in regional networks is indicative of the success of the DE-CIX strategy of bringing networks closer to the edge, and of the popularity of the DE-CIX GlobePEER Remote service.

Strategic outlook

Digital infrastructure should be global and as neutral, resilient, scalable, and secure as possible, in order to deliver the many services needed by people, institutions, and businesses.

A global lockdown needs a digital unlocking

We are at a very special moment in history. Never before in modern times have we seen such a global impact and a global response to a crisis, which largely ignores geopolitical borders. The Covid-19 outbreak and its repercussions have put cities, countries, entire regions on hold. The news each day brings new stories of economic hardship, of fear, but also signs of hope – hope for a vaccine, hope for the time after the virus.

One saving grace of this crisis is that the global digital infrastructure is by now well enough developed for people in most countries to stay in constant contact despite isolation. However, a digital divide remains. The Internet industry must take as their mandate the goal of a minimum level of digital infrastructure everywhere so that all communities can in future have access to information, content, and digital communication tools. The current global crisis will change our life going forwards, and to prepare for the future, this global lockdown needs a full digital unlocking. Read more
