Vision
The vision of DE-CIX is to provide premium IX services to all IP networks. This means nearly 100 percent availability and secure, friendly and courteous services at all times. DE-CIX believes that the established peering model is an essential part of today's Internet infrastructure and is here to stay.
In addition, new IP exchange services will be added to the traditional ones and the service offerings will be expanded from existing customer services to more IP related services on the existing infrastructure and customer platform. All these service offerings are not bound to national boundaries or geographical restrictions.

Mission
DE-CIX’s mission is to ensure that the Internet runs securely and smoothly by providing IX services to all kinds of network operators and corporations with a unique Autonomous System (AS). This goal is tackled in several ways:
- DE-CIX operates platforms in order to enable its customers to exchange any kind of Internet (IP) traffic,
- DE-CIX plans, develops, implements and operates new IPX services,
- DE-CIX offers consultancy and operational services to international third parties to plan, build and operate their own IXP,
- and DE-CIX delivers all above on a global basis expanding into foreign countries and markets.
DE-CIX runs distributed platforms to exchange any kind of Internet traffic on the highest possible service level. The platforms are currently located in four German cities, yet further expansion is planned. The largest DE-CIX platform currently is distributed over Frankfurt and provides service at 18 data center facilities using 10 different locations that are equipped with switching technology. To maximize the customer value of these exchange platforms, DE-CIX makes sure that these platforms are managed highly professional. This means they are secure, reliable, with excellent performance and scalable.
Over the next few years, telecommunication traffic will be migrated to IP-only, getting rid of the analogous PSTN infrastructure. That means not only pure Internet traffic will flow towards IXs. Also related IP traffic like fixed and mobile voice will be pushed towards IXs. VoIP peering and further next generation interconnect services will be implemented at IXs accompanied by new IX managed applications for different media conversion and interconnection.
Also the interconnection of Ethernet layer connections is part of the DE-CIX expansion plan. DE-CIX will assist the market to plan and implement this kind of next generation interconnection products. Additionally, DE-CIX will add more security and reliability to existing and forthcoming IX products where possible. Further assistance for DE-CIX customers in managing their traffic will be developed following the idea of a one stop shopping center for interconnecting networks of any kind.
DE-CIX provides its knowledge and experience in planning, setting up and running an IX to international third parties who want to build their own IX. Especially in emerging markets this kind of consultancy is of high value to the community. DE-CIX will analyze market developments, especially in Eastern Europe, Middle East, Africa, South America as well as Asia and extend its activities to new markets in order to maintain and develop its position in the global market with its own operations.
